Data sources & attribution
Tanko keeps its own normalized catalog of manga series, physical editions and physical volumes. External services are used for discovery and enrichment only — once a record is stored here, Tanko reads its own data.
Open Library
Book data and cover images courtesy of Open Library. Open Library supplies bibliographic records (titles, publishers, ISBNs, publication dates, formats) and cover images through its public Covers API.
Requests are rate limited, cached and de-duplicated, and identify Tanko with an application User-Agent. Results are normalized into Tanko's own series / edition / volume model before they are stored — Open Library is never queried on every page view.
Cover images
Covers are chosen in this order: a verified volume cover stored by Tanko, the edition's cover, an Open Library cover matched by ISBN-13, an Open Library cover id, the series artwork, and finally a Tanko placeholder. Missing covers are detected rather than displayed as blank artwork.
Retail pricing and purchase links
Prices and availability come only from verified retailer product pages stored in Tanko's own offers table. When no verified price exists, Tanko says so instead of estimating. No price shown here is invented.
Retailer links may earn Tanko a commission where an affiliate program is active. Prices and availability are shown only when verified on the retailer's product page.
Optional paid enrichment
ISBNdb can be enabled later as an optional paid enrichment provider. It is not required: without it, Open Library remains the free primary source and nothing degrades.
Your collection
Ownership records reference Tanko's shared catalog rows and are stored privately against your account. Your collection keeps working even when external services are unavailable.
